JAKARTA - The Directorate of Film, Music and New Media, Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) will hold the Indonesian Music Expo (IMEX) Forum, from 11 to 18 October 2020 online.

"IMEX 2020, is to develop the music and film industry. One of them is to globalize our music while still rooting in local music, "said Director of Film, Music and New Media, Ministry of Education and Culture, Ahmad Mahendra in a virtual conference in Jakarta, Wednesday (7/10/2020).

Besides that, IMEX aims to become a partner of WOMAD and WOMEX in Europe. "Even though right now, our focus is only on Indonesian music, " he said.

Seeing the opening of such a lucrative new market, many countries today have entered the word music arena by competing to hold world music festivals and expos in their regions.

The most influential festivals and expos in the development of global world music are the World Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) and the World Music Expo (WOMEX) which take place in Europe. This festival and expo shows that this planet has an extraordinary richness and diversity of world music cultures.

This diversity, grew and developed as a result of the meeting of various human civilizations for thousands of years in various parts of the world. Today, the development of world music in the world has opened a new music horizon in the third millennium. Therefore, world music players need to take a clear and solid position in the global music arena.

Mahendra explained that it was important for Indonesia to hold an international music festival like this. Because, Indonesia has extraordinary diversity. Through this activity, Indonesia can globalize Indonesian music.

"Collaboration with other countries, can introduce our extraordinary music, such as gamelan which is well known to the world, and can influence the development of world music, we will continue to develop it, " he explained.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made changes in all fields, including in the implementation of IMEX. With the current pandemic outbreak, IMEX will be implemented virtually first through the Youtube platform (Lokaswara Project) and Facebook (Indonesian Music Expo) on 11-18 October Pk. 19.00 - 21.00 WIB.

He added, later there will be 15 groups that will be displayed, and this group has been known in various world music festivals that are very prestigious in the world. The IMEX live event itself will be held on July 1 - 4, 2021 in Ubud, Bali. (***)
